About Split

The history of Split is too rich and too thick to fit all into several sentences. Although in the area of Split and earlier there were Greek settlements, its first inhabitants and founders of Split should still be considered the Emperor Diocletian, who on the peninsula near the great city of Salona in 293 BC began to build a luxurious autochthonous palace of about 30 thousand square meters who retired after ten years of construction when he left the Roman Emperor throne.

Centuries later, the city was born, starting when the inhabitants of Salona fled to the palace before Avars and Slavs. They moved to a town that grew out of the wall of the palace of many authorities, from Christians in the 10th century, through the Hungarian and Venetian administration, to the French rulers and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Modern times and the 20th century “moved” Split from the kingdom of Yugoslavia through the tragic and heroic days of Italian and German occupation in the Second World War when Split was one of the centers of anti-fascist waste, through Socialist Yugoslavia and finally to today’s free and independent Croatia, members of the European Union.

The turbulent past has left its traces in the everyday life of the city that has always moved forward, remaining the central zone of this part of the coast to the present day. It was in the mix of historical layers and clumsiness, and sometimes of developmental hastiness, but it’s all part of its originality today. Today, the big city is home to the quietest storms of history, the lively spirit of youth and the charm of the Mediterranean and still all in all, Croatia’s warmth …
