Mario Beretta (Italy)

BIO

Mario Beretta (born 30 October 1959 in Milan, Italy) is the current President of the FIGC Technical Sector, appointed by the Federal Council on 19 December 2025. He is the 20th president of the body, founded in 1958, which oversees coach education and technical development for Italian football.

A UEFA Pro coach, Beretta began coaching youth teams in Lombardy in the early 1980s and made his senior debut at Corsico in 1994. His career on the bench then took him through Pro Patria, Saronno, Como, Lumezzane, Varese, Ternana, and most notably Chievo Verona, where he made his Serie A debut in 2004–05 and led the side to safety. He subsequently coached Brescia, Torino, Lecce, Siena, Parma and other clubs, totalling 562 matches as head coach, 186 of them in Serie A.

From 2018 to 2025 Beretta served on the FIGC Federal Council in the technicians’ quota and has been a long-standing lecturer in technique and tactics at FIGC central coaching courses in Coverciano. The Italian Coaches Association (AIAC) has supported his entire path; his appointment as President of the Technical Sector was confirmed unanimously by the Federal Council.

The lecture defines the role and responsibilities of the Head of the Youth Sector within a modern football club, and explains how this position connects technical, organisational and educational decisions. Particular emphasis is placed on competences, governance and the impact this role has on long-term player development.
